| Welcome
to Letters Home: Stories of the Civil War North and South.

Listen to the
stories of two women who disguised themselves and fought
during the American Civil War. Discover why the war was fought
through the eyes of these women and find out what happened at
the Battle of Gettysburg.
I was never that interested
in the American Civil War until I discovered that at least 200
women disguised themselves and fought in the war. These are
documented cases. Many others may have gone
unnoticed.
Some of these women went on to
collect their pensions after the war. They had to remain in
disguise to do so. They were only discovered if they were
injured and sent to a hospital.

Merri Lee Debany and I have
created a compelling 50 minute presentation of letters,
monologue and music that teaches and inspires. There are
follow-up workshops available which include activities that
inspire students to write letters, develop their own
historical personas, create their own presentation and most of
all, to think about ways in which this conflict affected every
facet in American society, then and now.
Yes, the war was about
slavery but it was also about economy and basic rights
afforded individuals and states under the United States
Constitution. Hear the opposing and sometimes similar
viewpoints of a female soldier from the North and another from
the South. This story has never been told like this before!
Letters Home: Stories of the
Civil War North and South will inspire your students. They
will want to learn more and be totally involved in the
learning process.
The 50
minutes presentation can be booked alone, or you may book
workshops and residencies. Discounts available.
