| January 19, 2010 This is my
second visit to Bloomfield Middle School to present
"The Road East: stories of the Silk Road." The
students really enjoy it. Imagine seeing your classroom
transformed into a Bedouin tent. You are asked to remove
your shoes and invited inside by Lela, wife of Rashid the
Trader. She tells you of the many wonders you will see as
you travel with her husband's caravan toward Cathay. You
here the story of silk and have a chance to view and touch
silk samples, as well as participate in a silk reeling
demonstration. This is just one of my many historical
programs that brings history to life, excites the students
with hands-on experiences, and helps create life-long
learners. After all, isn't that the goal of education, to
not prepare students for their work as adults but to keep
them interested in learning?! |
